The main gripe we have with this system is that it is quite tricky to install, yet problems may develop after a year or so. As such, we cannot strongly recommend this electric dog fence.

If you have a very large breed, they might find even the highest setting doesn’t provide them with enough incentive not to stray. For most dogs, though, even those typically resistant to correction, this fence should keep them where you want them.

The main issue we have with this fence concerns larger dogs who may not comply with correction.

This is the 1-acre kit that comes with 1,000 feet of robust wire that you can bury underground to build out a convenient and effective containment system.

The collar receiver is waterproof. If your dog takes a dip in the water, it will stand up to being submersed, too. As the brand name implies, this system is built to stay the distance.

The major complaint we have about this system is the fact it is especially awkward to set up. If you have basic DIY skills and a few hours to spare, you’ll find no problems. If you have no tools and a limited capacity for practical tasks, we suggest exploring some of the other electric dog fences we review today.

This is an excellent way to contain more than one dog without needing to buy more than one containment system.

Convenience is uppermost here. The collar charges fully in just 3 hours, providing you with almost two weeks of use before it needs a burst of charge.

One of the main selling points with this fence is the way your dog can come back into the yard without being shocked again if he breaches the boundaries. This should encourage him to come home, and it’s a feature not included on many competing fences.

Aside from a few glitches when we tested this fence, we can’t recommend it strongly enough, especially for owners of stubborn hounds.

8. Extreme Dog Fence

The first thing you will appreciate is the enormous choice you get when it comes to the number of pets you can contain and the coverage area. This iteration is intended for a single dog and comes with 500 feet of wire thrown in. This is a new and uprated version of this model, with improvements to the collar receiver and the electronics.

Although the warranty is quite short, you will still benefit from a year of coverage.

The collar receiver is waterproof but not fully submersible.

Benefit from a choice of contact prongs, both covered with plastic to mitigate any irritation to Rover.

Overall, this is a rock-solid containment system with no notable drawbacks, but does it make the right choice for you?

9. PetSafe Compact Invisible Dog Fence

Do you have a larger garden and a number of dogs that need containing? Get the job done on the cheap with this fantastic above-ground solution.

Due to the super-portable nature of the set-up, this fence makes a neat fit if you’re camping or out in the RV.

The wireless nature also makes installation a cinch and won’t send you digging up the garden to bury wires. You should allow roughly 2 hours to get things going then you can start training your furballs at once.

Your dog will receive correction that steps up through progressive levels. You can disengage shock correction if you prefer a more humane and less direct approach. Instead, you’ll use ultrasonic beeps to dissuade your pooch from wandering.

Some fences zap your dog when he returns home but with this model, he can return to the fold without being shocked, so he isn’t reluctant to head back inside.

The only minor niggle with this otherwise exceptional fence is an annoying sound that emits at the highest setting. In all other respects, you get impeccable performance married to unrivalled value.

The system comes with 500 feet of wire included. If you require more coverage, you can purchase extra wire to a maximum of 40 acres. This should provide you with more than enough latitude for even the largest yard.

One of the main benefits of this electric dog fence is the filtering system baked in. This will reduce the likelihood of external sources of electricity interfering with the containment system. Accuracy is key with this kind of system, and Dogtra delivers fully.

You can flick between two different modes. One offers a vibrating alert as your dog approaches the boundary, while the other delivers a vibrating alert followed by a static shock.

The transformer has a wire breakage alert built in. If the fence becomes compromised, the light will turn off and a warning beep will sound.

It is worth noting that this fence does not come with training flags included. It is worth investing in some of these to streamline accustoming your furball to his new boundaries.
